Misconceptions of Dementia in Singapore

31 October 2019, Interview with Gabriel, 58, a working adult who has friends suffering from dementia
Gabriel touches on a topic close to heart, as he recounts the experiences faced by his friend suffering from dementia. As he shares his personal take on dementia in Singapore, he reveals some misconceptions of this condition, as well as his opinion on the current efforts done to raise awareness about dementia
Upon the interview, we have decided to do an in-depth analysis of the excerpt by Gabriel, exploring the topic of dementia

According to Gabriel, people sometimes assume that dementia patients use their condition as an "excuse" to commit petty crimes such as theft, only saying that they have dementia when their crimes are revealed. Otherwise, they would never admit to having dementia.

There is often much shame and associated to dementia, such that dementia patients are often in denial about their condition. Despite ingrained values of what is morally right or wrong, dementia patients often feel immense guilt and pressure when know that they have failed to remember simple things that we take for granted.

However, there is much stigma faced by Persons With Dementia, with people associating dementia to old people with disheveled external appearances, inability to care for oneself, using their condition to committing crimes ect., many of which are stereotypes associated with people suffering from later stages of dementia.

There is also an assumption that dementia is "a normal part of aging", which is not the case because dementia is a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain, and can even affect not only the elderly, but even younger people in the case of early onset dementia.

Due to the lack of proper awareness, falsely normalising of dementia as a part of and negative stereotypes associated has made it difficult for actual dementia patients to actually seek help regarding their condition, since they may think that it is a part of aging. Such negativity from the society, and pressure upon themselves may possibly lead dementia patients into a downward spiral of depression and guilt towards their condition.
